Lumeria Maui

1813 Baldwin Ave, Makawao, HI 96768, USA

If you’re looking for tropical tranquillity, bypass Maui’s buzzy resort enclaves and head away from the coast to the island’s laid-back Upcountry, where you’ll find Lumeria. At the 24-room wellness retreat, visitors can start the day with a guided sunrise meditation, then strengthen their yoga practice, learn to hula or surf, and go snorkeling off the North Shore. Spa treatments include Hawaiian massage and acupuncture as well as nontraditional therapies like crystal healing and shaman-led journeys. The schedule is flexible, so you’ll have plenty of time to learn about Hawaii’s paniolo (cowboy) culture or just take in the ocean views from your private lanai. Guest rooms feature art by local Maui artists, four-poster beds topped with organic linens, and stone-tile showers stocked with Aveda products, while the Wooden Crate restaurant prepares farm-to-table meals with nearly 200 types of fruits and vegetables that grow on the property.

Where to Stay in Upcountry Maui

Lumeria, a wellness center, hotel, and restaurant, is located a short drive up the mountain from the Maui airport. But if you’re looking for a beachside golf resort, this is not the place for you. Instead, the vibe here is equal parts Tulum, Ubud, and Byron Bay, all in the midst of eclectic upcountry Maui. Situated between the plantation towns of Pa’ia and Makawao, Lumeria offers guests classes and workshops in hula dancing, yoga, meditation, and more. The hotel’s 24 rooms feature art by local Maui artists. The Wooden Crate restaurant prepares farm-to-table meals with mangoes, avocados, and nearly 200 other types of fruits and vegetables that grow on the property.

Finding Peace: Lumeria Maui

I read somewhere that the most expensive commodity in travel is peace. Lumeria is already there, offering respite for mind, body and soul in elegant surroundings that are intended to stimulate and relax all at once. That is the dichotomy of Lumeria. On the slopes of dormant volcano Haleakala, over-looking the surf town of Paia from a perch in cowboy country, Lumeria exhibits not a hippie vibe but one of genuine caring for guests who come to work on their own awareness of the universal connectedness of spirit. The place has what Hawaiians call " mana” a deepening spiritual sense of healing and clarity that seems to emanate from the very earth here. Some come to work on their spirit journey or life-path. Some take yoga classes, some spend time with world-renown healers or do body cleanses, or immerse themselves in Hawaiian culture and Hawaiian healing practice. Many just want to play in the ocean with top surfers and watermen to experience the gifts of the ocean. The process of re-imagining the former plantation worker’s rest home, by designer Xorin Balbes also became a process for him to re-imagine himself. He has left the “designer” life and its trappings behind to spearhead a quest for peace by collaborating with the world’s best healers and minds. A huge undertaking for most but by what I have seen at Lumeria, not for Xorin. Go to website for more on his peace foundation, Lumeria programs and to book a wellness vacation like no other.
