A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, the postcard-pretty city of Lübeck was founded in the early 12th century and is renowned for its variety of architecture (from Gothic and Baroque to neoclassical), its charming Altstadt (old town) and its abundant churches. Highlights include the Church of St. Mary with its brick-vaulted ceiling, the medieval Holstentor (or Holsten Gate) and the MuK Music and Congress Hall, which hosts the annual Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. In winter, the Lübeck Christmas Markets are also a hugely popular draw.
