Verbier is known for it’s amazing après ski scene, great powder, and pricey accommodations. To save some money, stay just outside of town in the neighboring village of Lourtier, where husband and wife Patricia and Jean-Marc Pellissier run the charming Hotel La Vallée. The rooms are simple, but cozy and the setting is completely charming (and a spa will open this winter). The village feels trapped in time with its local butcher shop, fromagerie, and gingerbread-style homes. Jean-Marc (photo), a former engineer, doubles as chef and puts on quite a show preparing Raclette in the dining room. Guests can watch as he slices thin pieces of cheese from the enormous wheel and melt it to a gooey square that he serves alongside potatoes and cured meats. It’s best eaten with the local red wine.
