Lorne House, Box, Wiltshire
A Guest House with a Railroad HistoryThe village of Box is just outside Bath, and is full of rail heritage. Lorne House is the place where the Reverend Awdrey, author of Thomas the Tank Engine, lived as a boy. As he lay in bed he could hear the trains in nearby Box Tunnel, which later inspired his books.
Today Lorne House is a welcoming guest house with comfortable ensuite rooms. There's a wonderful breakfast menu to prepare you for a day of sightseeing and the owners have lots of ideas to inspire you. Within the village of Box are some great pubs and an Indian restaurant. The city of Bath is 30 minutes by public bus (a cheaper option than parking). I stayed here when visiting Bath Christmas Market and the stress of not having to find a car parking place immediately vanished! Alternatively, the Cotswolds are just a short drive away and there are walks that can be done from the door of Lorne House.
