Fake Flowers, Real PeopleA bit like St. Tropez of the Caribbean, St. Barth's is known for its party scene and jet setter lifestyle. I rented a jeep one day and drove around the island. Stopping at L'Orient Beach I was reminded that real people live and die here too.
I was amazed at the flowers in the cemetery—so colorful and abundant. None of them looked as wilted as I did in the searing heat. Relatives must tend to these plots daily, I thought. At closer look, however, I realized the flowers were not real. I asked a passerby why the fake flowers?
"So the deceased can have beautiful flowers all year long, while we go on living." Sensible. Efficient. Tender.
