Longtou is probably the most touristy of Xiamen's shopping streets, but that's unavoidable on Gulangyu Island. The reason to go here is for the atmosphere. Century-old mansions and car-free, cobblestone streets welcome window-shoppers. The souvenir shops geared towards Gulangyu's tourist hoards, and the KFC and Pappa Johns, though disguised behind beautiful facades, are unlikely to impress jaded tourists. Fortunately, Longtou Road has a more authentic side as well. Walk further from the docks and you'll see more locals (Gulangyu has 20,000 of them) shopping for their daily needs. A grand brick market hall hosts vendors selling vegetables and spices. Even more colorful is the live seafood market taking place out on the street where you can watch locals haggle like pros.
