Almost in the center of the country, Uluru (Ayers Rock) is among the country’s most famous sites, along with the Sydney Opera House and the Great Barrier Reef. If you look at a map and realize how remote Uluru is—almost 300 miles from the closest city, Alice Springs—you might imagine that traveling here requires giving up some creature comforts. That’s not the case on Liane’s itinerary. Longitude 131° combines eco-sensitivity with high thread counts for sensitive skin. Accommodations are in tents, though these include WiFi, rainfall showerheads, and air conditioning. An added plus is that the tents are laid out in a row so that every one includes an unobstructed view of the desert’s dramatic sandstone monolith.
