Loja do Burel
One of Lisbon's most unique and interesting shops, this high-design destination features colorful items (backpacks, handbags, blankets, shoes, homewares) made from burel, a Portuguese black wool that was previously used for little more than the heavy cloaks donned by highland-dwelling shepherds of the Serra da Estrela mountains. A lost art, both the artisanal weaving process and the fabric itself was resurrected by the store's owners, who breathed new life into a dying Portuguese mountain tradition. Not everything is necessarily practical, but all of it is very well-made and quite beautiful, which makes it worth a look-see even if you're not in the market for a wool baseball cap.
