In the wine region along the Danube in Lower Austria, acclaimed American architect Steven Holl designed a striking contemporary building for the Loisium World of Wine in Langenlois. Surrounded by centuries-old vines, the building is a prime example of the painterly form of deconstructivism that is Holl’s trademark. The building’s surface is punctuated by windows that provide views of the countryside while dotting the interior with splashes of sunlight. As you make your way through the 900-year-old cellars and the various educational stations, and perhaps especially if you’ve already sampled some of the region’s products, you may feel like you are floating through a glass of Grüner Veltliner as you learn about the process of wine making.
