There are few more romantic places to spend the night than in a starbed, on the equator, gazing up at the universe while listening to lions roaring and hippos whomping in the distance. Such is the offering at the Loisaba Starbeds on the 56,000-acre private Loisaba Conservancy. Here, rooms come complete with a large open-air wooden deck and bed on wheels. Each night, the beds are rolled out onto the deck, and once the lights go out guests snuggle under the covers and stare up at the glittering sky through the black mosquito net. As the sun rises the next morning, guests are woken with a hot drink and spend the early hours sipping away as the sounds of hippos and elephants drinking and playing in the dam below ripple up to the bedrooms. By day, Loisaba is a wonderful place to enjoy a game drive, as it is home to more than 50 species of mammals including elephants, lions, leopards, and wild dogs.
