Ljubljana Castle anchors Slovenia's capital. The medieval fortress dates back to the 15th-century and overlooks the Old Town. It's no surprise that the castle, one of the largest in Slovenia, is a major tourist draw. But the real surprise is that it's also a huge draw for locals. The castle can be reached by funicular but it's also a short, yet steep walk from Old Town. Runners should note, it's a great workout with rewarding views in the early morning before the crowds.
Different guided tours are available and worthy of first-time visitors who are curious about the history of the castle hill and the Ottoman invasions. It costs nothing to enter the castle courtyard, where you can enjoy a coffee or glass of wine or dinner at two fantastic restaurants. There are also art galleries, a great shop selling traditional Slovenian crafts. Depending on the time of year, the courtyard hosts movie nights, dance nights or live concerts.
