Live and Learn like a Local
If you have a week or more to spend in Nicaragua, I highly recommend taking Spanish lessons at Casa Xalteva. In addition to small conversational classes, they organize home-stays with local families and afternoon excursions to nearby sites like the volcano Mombacho. Living with a family is an amazing way to support the community, learn about the culture, practice spanish and get fed traditional meals three times a day. At about $90/week, it is also a great way to save some money! The spanish lessons are also affordable and proceeds go towards a school that they run on premise for local children. My experience with the school and my family has been unforgettable. Gabriella is a phenomenal professor and my host family (the mother's name is Zoila) are extremely warm and welcoming.
