Washington's San Juan Islands and Canada's Gulf Islands are home to three resident Orca pods. The waters off the San Juan Islands are a protected Marine Sanctuary so the pods feed on salmon in the area. These Orca populations are at risk due to environmental factors and decrease in salmon runs.
Boats and paddlers must maintain a 200-yard distance. Believe it or not, these four paddlers had NO IDEA this breech was taking place! I took this photo from a safe distance. If you look closely at the 2nd kayaker from the left, you will see that directly in front is a dorsal from a different orca that had just submerged right in front of all four kayakers. Oh yeah, a second and a half, and one HUGE splash later, they became very aware!
