In the charming, historical city of Lambertville, NJ, there's only a river (the stately Delaware) that separates you from another state...Pennsylvania.
George Washington rode across the Delaware river in 1777 when he marched towards Trenton. The famous Washington Street, of course, is a nod to the famous historical events.
On a culinary front, Lambertville surprised me with its fine niche palate, including the best eggplant fries I've ever tasted.
Lambertville is home to a quiet D&R Canal, and Lilly's on the Canal is an excellent restaurant which serves classic American fare (including these quirky fries). They also have a gluten free chocolate cake that will make you feel less guilty for indulging.
