Library of Muyinga

Library of Muyinga
The Library of Muyinga in Burundi was designed by the Belgian group, BC Architects, and built by the community using locally sourced materials, such as clay for roof tiles. Completed in 2014, it is the first public library in the 709-square-mile province of Muyinga and is the first installment in the plans to create a school for deaf children. The building’s design incorporates parts of traditional Burundian architecture, such as the “hallway porch” that not only protects the structure from rain and sun but also provides a space for most social interactions in Burundian homes. The library offers several cozy reading nooks, such as bookcase steps and an enormous handmade sisal-rope hammock that makes for a dreamy hanging mezzanine.—Miranda Smith
