Leuven, Belgium

Weekends in the center of Leuven, Belgium are packed full of fun. There are street artists showing their skills, occasional bands are playing in the square, weddings take place at the beautiful Town Hall. There are restaurants everywhere serving delicious food and drinks, fruit and veggie markets selling what is in season. Right now the tables are full of cherries and strawberries that smell from miles away. The architecture is simply breathtaking, it’s a delight to look at the Town Hall, at the complexity of the sculptures adorning it. St. Peter’s Church, built in the 15th century, is also in the main square. Go inside and see the large and elaborate oak pulpit, which was transferred from the abbey church of Ninove. It is carved with a life-size representation of Norbert of Xanten falling from a horse. Very impressive work.

Fabulous sunset over a fabulous town

It’s not hard to fall in love with this incredible town that is always buzzing with life. The last time we were there, we experienced the most amazing sunset. The sky looked like it was on fire, it’s light making the impressive architecture even more amazing than usual. The cafes and restaurants are many and very affordable. Going there in the evening is great, just pick a place you fancy and stay outside, enjoy some delicious Flemish dishes and relax, watch the world go by. One of the main buildings in the main square, the former National Bank, was sold some five year ago and it’s in the works of becoming a five star hotel so stay tuned for that.

Festive Leuven

I posted about how much I love Leuven before. I have never seen during the holidays. It’s even more beautiful than normal, which I did not think was possible. If you ever wanted to visit, the winter holidays is the time to do it. It simply sparkles with light.

Eating out in Leuven

This time of year Leuven looks especially beautiful. I you want to dine outside, the same you would do in summer, fear not as the restaurants have heat lamps mounted over the tables that makes eating outside a very enjoyable experience. With all the lights sparkling in the Grote Markt it would be a pity to stay inside.
