Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art
Opened in 2004, Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art seeks to bridge the future of art with the past and present. The sleek complex consists of two wings: one dedicated to traditional Korean art and another to international contemporary art. The traditional wing is shaped like a reverse cone with a spiraling walkway that works its way down through galleries of ancient paintings, calligraphy, and crafts. The contemporary wing, composed of glass and rusted stainless steel, was built without supporting posts to encourage viewers to move freely among distinctive works by artists like Olafur Eliasson, Basquiat, and Takashi Murakami. The experience continues outside on a parking lot deck that’s been converted into a polished sculpture garden.
