Las Catalinas

Sugar Beach Rd, Guanacaste Province, Las Catalinas, Costa Rica

One of the key traits of Las Catalinas, a new urbanism resort-like town in Costa Rica’s Northwestern Guanacaste region, is its commitment to the environment. The town, helmed by billionaire Charles Brewer, rests on 1,200 acres of land, 1,000 of which will remain wild. The Las Catalinas team carved, by hand, miles of hiking and mountain biking trails into a part of this land over the course of several years and when you walk them now, you feel that human touch. The trails range from easy to fairly sweat-inducing, with graceful switchbacks and well-timed views of the Pacific. Best yet, they’re home to families of howler monkeys, which frequently come out to play.
