Anyone with an attraction to big, hairy beasts can visit the 54-hectare (134-acre) Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to see its small population of musk oxen. Some 30 of the creatures reside here, their forebears originally imported from Greenland as part of a repopulation effort in 1930, decades after the species had disappeared from Alaska. Reindeer and caribou also find a home at the Station, as does a shop selling qiviut, the underwool of musk oxen.
