Laos Buffalo DairyFounded by two expat couples who used to live in Singapore, Laos Buffalo Dairy is part food business, part social enterprise—and the first of its kind in Laos. The company rents buffaloes from local farmers, then vaccinates and cares for them while producing a range of dairy products. The resulting milk is creamy, smooth, and sweeter than cow’s milk; the yogurt is dense and slightly grainy with a hint of tartness; and the mozzarella is in demand from local restaurants. The farm, which features sheds, silos, quarantine areas, production facilities, and a kitchen in the works, occupies a rural plot near Kuang Si Falls and aims to be a tourist attraction in itself. Visiting families can try some of the milk or cheese and even feed the baby buffaloes.
