Lanzarote

On Lanzarote, the easternmost island of the Canaries, Spanish archipelago off the northwestern coast of Africa, there’s a volcanic semi-crater that has created a dense and salty green-colored lagoon. The lagoon has grown rich with algae and the contrast of the volcanic rock, black beach and green lagoon is stunning. If you’re looking for an inexpensive afternoon excursion, this one is worth the visit. The lake is protected so swimming is prohibited, however, visitors can still walk to the edge, and close ups are worth the walk for the geology and the fauna here.

Like the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is of volcanic origin. Some parts of the island, especially the national park, resembles the surface of the moon with its giant craters and rocks and dust. Other parts are more welcoming, such as the cactus garden where they have collected cacti from around the world and put in one place. The windmill makes for a very special touch when shooting photos.

Rock climbing, fresh fishing, volcano touring can be found on this small island in the Canaries. Lanzarote appeals in its less touristy and surf town vibe. I rented a car on my own and drove through the little villages, white washed with green roofs--each feels like a green version of Greece‘s Santorini. Going to the end of the island is powerful, cliffs drop down and you can see out into forever.
