As a big fish enthusiast, my visit to Lankayan Island has left me in awe. Our journey began with an 80km boat ride through the sky-blue waters from the city of Sandakan, with nothing in sight except the open sea. It was an experience that is beyond anything I have ever experienced before. The island is located in the middle of the Sulu Sea and it consists of over 20 dive sites, including a few wrecks and numerous reefs which encircle the island. It is good to research, or enquire about some of the sites so that you can decide where you want to do and what you wish to see.
While diving, we encountered thousands of small fish and some enormous ones! The two most memorable dive sites were the Jawfish Lair and the Mosquito wreck. During our dive at the Jawfish Lair, we were fortunate enough to see a few Leopard sharks resting in the sand, while the Mosquito wreck was home to jacks and barracudas. Unfortunately, we did not get to witness any whale sharks during our trip, since we were told that they can be seen in the open waters while diving.
As a tip, I would suggest a visit during the dry season, from March through October, but diving is open all-year round. I cannot wait to return and re-live some of the best memories from my last trip!
