Sail down Lake Tanganyika
The historic MV Liemba is the oldest functioning passenger ferry in the world, and a trip on it down Tanzania’s Lake Tanganyika is filled with colourful experiences to embellish any trip. Passengers are local traders loading and unloading their cargo, be it pineapples or flip flops, and those using the ferry for transport between the shores. The boat departs from the port town of Kigoma, travelling 500 kilometres south and in to Zambia. On route, the first land dock isn’t until the boat has reached Zambia. In between, travellers can decant themselves onto a smaller ship to reach places like Lagosa, which is convenient if heading for the Mahale Mountains National Park, or the peaceful beach of Kipili on the lake shore.
