Lake of Lucerne
Lake Lucerne, Switzerland
Switzerland is grand in sun or cloudsSwtizerland is like the cake, the icing, the candle and the birthday song all in one. It's the most spectacular place I've ever been, and Lucerne (Luzern) is so picturesque it doesn't matter how grey the day, it's perfect.
I love the wooden chapel bridge, Lake of Lucerne, the old city center, and all the pastry shops along the old stone streets.
I want to go back right now! Let's fly to Zurich and hop on a train to Luzern. The sights along the way make the short ride extra-special.

The sun bids farewell to the Vierwaldstättersee
Any trip to Switzerland would be incomplete without a visit to this charming little city. In addition to the famous Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) and the Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument), Lucern has many art galleries (my favorite being the Picasso pieces of the Rosengart collection). A pleasant stroll along the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake of Lucerne) leads you to a the giant Verkehrshaus der Schweiz (Swiss Museum of Transport) full of towering feats of Swiss aviation (the EURECA Satellite was an eye-opener). If you come at the right time of year, you can hitch a ride to the Jungraujoch (highest rail station in Europe) or the even closer Mount Pilatus: a trip to the peaks of the Urner Alps that line the horizon. With only one day in Lucern and six days in Switzerland, I had no time to eat and walked past many restaurants and eateries in my quest to see all that the city had to offer. There was no time to rest and my only hunger was to learn more about this city at the crossroads of modernity, tradition and sheer charm.
