Tanzania: Lake Chala CampsiteWe needed a weekend away from Arusha but only had a couple of nights. We heard that Lake Chala was picture-postcard perfect, so decided to check it out ourselves. We packed our food and camping gear and drove 2 hours to Moshi.
About a 35-minute drive from Moshi along a graded dirt road (providing the weather has been okay most vehicles can do this trip easily) we follow the signs to Lake Chala campsite.
We chose our spot, parked the car, and set up camp with just enough time for a sunset stroll and gorgeous view over the Lake.
The staff at the camp were very helpful and gave us everything we needed to cook our dinner that evening. The toilet and shower blocks were spotless and with super warm water.
The next day we trekked down the hillside to the water (about 20 minutes and some parts steep) and arrived lakeside. Now before leaving the camp we asked the staff if it's true about there being crocodiles in the lake. Locals claim that years ago a guy from Zim introduced some baby crocs to the lake. Supposedly after some attacks on local villagers they baited traps and killed them all.
But Google for yourself and see that it's possible babies hatched and they are still there - hence why I refused to budge off my tree trunk that had fallen into the water (nor did I dangle my legs in). Everyone else swam safe and sound, so I guess you decide fact or fable. One thing for certain, it's gorgeous up there and a great escape from Arusha or Moshi.
