On my recent trip to Maui the first thing I did was sign up for a surf class. Surfing has been on my bucket list for years and I couldn't have asked for a better locale to put my balancing skills to the test.
Our instructors were Dustin and "Sharky" of Maui Surfer Girls and they were full of personality. Before getting into the water, we had a crash course in Hawaiian language and a few minutes on our boards to practice our technique.
After one failed attempt to catch a wave, I made it up on my board on the next one and continued doing so until our two hour lesson was over. It helped having a small student to teacher ratio and having the rest of my class cheer me on as I rode toward the shore.
