Laguna Beach Greeter Statue Laguna Beach’s reputation as a welcoming community may very well have started with Eiler Larsen. Larsen arrived in Laguna in the 1940s, and though he was a bit of a vagabond—with long hair and a scraggly beard to match—the town embraced him and his eccentric ways. In return, he stood on the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Forest Avenue every day until his death in 1979, waving to cars and greeting locals as they passed him on the sidewalk. To remember him and keep his friendly ways going, the city council deemed him the Official Laguna Beach Greeter and erected a statue in his honor near the corner of Brooks Street and Pacific Coast Highway. Today, visitors are welcome to stop at the statue, take a few selfies, and carry on Larsen’s message by waving at passing cars and pedestrians.
