Lago de Coatepeque

Lago de Coatepeque, El Salvador

Day trip to Lago de Coatepeque

Coatepeque is a crater lake, formed by a volcanic eruption five to six thousand years ago. Situated at the base of the Santa Ana volcano, Coatepeque enjoys all the attributes of most crater lakes: depth, intense blue color, and cleanliness. Located about an hour outside the capital of San Salvador, it makes for a scenic day trip—don’t forget to bring your camera.
