Laboe Naval Memorial

Strandstraße 92, 24235 Laboe, Germany

At the entrance to the Kiel Fjord, a 72-meter-tall (236-foot-tall), brick-clad monument soars over the water. Built in the ‘30s to honor Imperial German sailors and inaugurated by Hitler, the Laboe Naval Memorial was left untouched by the Allies. Today the memorial represents sailors of all nations and the crews of international warships pay their respects when passing by. At the base of the monument, a beached U-boat is now a museum and a plaque memorializes U.S. submarine sailors.
