Whether you approach it from sea in a yacht or by foot or car on dry land, La Soufrière, rising to a height of 4,000 feet, is one of the most spectacular peaks in the Caribbean. The slopes of the active volcano are crossed by two trails, the Leeward and Windward ones, that pass through lowland forest before ascending to a higher tropical rain forest on their way to the summit. The is a must-see for botanists, with unique tree ferns, bromeliads, and lianas thriving in the shaded, moist environment. This is a full-day adventure. The ascent to the volcano’s peak will take somewhere between two to a little over three hours depending on your pace, and if you want to descend into the crater itself when you reach the summit, you should add in extra time.
