La Résidence Hôtel & Spa, HuéSet along the evocatively named Perfume River, Hué is a good place to get a feel for the conflux of Vietnam's history, French colonial influences, and postwar life—and this riverside hotel is the perfect base from which to soak it all up. Built in the art deco style to serve as the residence of the French colonial governor, the elegant villa and gardens were restored and relaunched as a hotel in 2005. Many of the 122 rooms and suites offer views of the river or the tops of the Imperial Citadel (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), while all feature vintage-inspired furnishings, local fabrics, and the required modern conveniences. The 1920s style also helps set the scene at the seven-room spa, which has garnered praise for its locally inspired treatments—including Vietnamese cupping therapy and baths infused with rice wine and ginger—and at Le Gouverneur Bar, where you can settle into cushy armchairs or on the terrace, overlooking the gardens, to enjoy a drink or Cuban cigar. Come mealtime, savor French-Vietnamese and Continental fine dining at Le Parfum restaurant, or book one of the hotel’s fun foodie experiences, including cyclo market tours, cooking classes, dinner cruises, poolside barbecues, and private picnics on Thien An Hill.

Bargain Vietnam Hotel Ft. Delicious Breakfast Buffets
A governor’s residence before the war, La Résidence sits near the city center of Hué, overlooking the river. A refurbishment in 2005 added two new wings and maintained the original art deco design and furnishings. The hotel’s travel desk can organize cycling trips to Gia Long Tomb and excursions to the garden houses of Hué and to Phong Nha Cave. It also has one of the best breakfast buffets of Asian and Western food I’ve experienced. And it’s hard to beat the price tag. It’s a splurge in Vietnam, but a great bargain anywhere else in the world. From $152. This appeared in the August/September 2014 issue.

Art Deco gem to stay in Hue, Vietnam.
Excellent Art Deco small hotel to stay in Hue, Vietnam. Excellent Vietnamese cuisine, too. Plus, great value for money. (Ask for a room in their historic wing, rather than their more generic modern wing.) We enjoyed having cocktails each evening in their fantastic bar - they served us wonderful snacks [pictured] with compliments. Nice touch!

La Residence Hue: what a hway to stay
I love hotels, especially the ‘old dames’ of Asia which made travel more comfortable for the first cultural explorers who made the long journey East from Europe. La Résidence Hue, built in 1930, is one such legend and of my most favorite historic hotels. Originally built as the French Governor’s official residence, the building then became a government-run hotel before being lovingly restored in 2005 to become the luxurious boutique hotel with high ceilings and an art deco style we see today. The former capital city of Vietnam, Hue (roughly pronounced 'hu-aye' or 'hway') is a destination packed with great history and merely stepping foot inside this well-preserved sanctuary provokes the feeling that the last 80 years never took place. Now mixing modern day comforts and technology with charming history and class, the four-star, three-storey hotel set on the banks of the Perfume River is a building that softly whispers its history and character into the ears of all who visit.
