Outside the city of Verona lies the Valpolicella wine region, home of the wines of the same name and the full bodied Amarone. This area is not heavily touristed, at least not by Americans. And it is beautiful: hilly, slightly mountainous, with gorgeous valleys lined with grapevines and dotted with houses and the occasional church steeple. I stayed in the town of Fumane, a village really, at La Meridiana B&B which is an offshoot of the Enoteca della Valpolicella. In fact, you eat breakfast at the Enoteca. And, I might add, do plan at least one dinner or lunch there as the food is fabulous...not to mention the extensive wine list! With a car, you can simply drive from one small town to another, stopping at the small, family-owned wineries and tasting the fabulous wine. You might need to call ahead and make appointments for some, but others keep their doors open for anyone driving, or walking, by.
