La Jaquita Baya is a small eatery in the Miramar neighborhood of San Juan, PR. Known by locals as one of the city's go-to eateries, La Jaquita Baya serves up tapas and entrée-size dishes of local flavors with a slightly modern twist. The location is a bit difficult to find, so keep an eye out as you are driving down the street.
This place is small and comfortable. The patrons are locals and the staff is super friendly.
Foods I tasted include braised short ribs, taquitos, fish ceviche, taquitos with flavorful ground beef, crispy calamari, and an incredible chunk of pork belly sitting on a round corn cake in a bath of scallion broth. This last dish was accompanied by a spoon to occasionally baste the pork belly with the delicious broth.
Dessert was heaven: La Jaquita Baya's popular "diplo" is a warm chocolate cake stuffed with cream cheese, covered in vanilla ice cream and a cascading airy mound of Nutella mousse. I also tasted the panetela de guayaba—a sponge cake stuffed with guava paste, topped with white chocolate ice cream, mounds of whipped cream, and shaved almonds.
