In defense of Grand Place restaurants
The cognoscenti and savvy travelers often advise others to steer clear of restaurants on La Grand Place (as well as other areas heavily visited by tourists) - and the reasons they give are all valid: the prices are often higher, the service frequently impersonal and the food usually not as good as less convenient restaurants. BUT there is something to be said for eating in a certain place, with a particular view. And sometimes the location is such that it overshadows other considerations. The fact is, it's hard to have a bad meal in Belgium. To sit at an outdoor table in La Grand Place and savor the view or sit just steps inside a cozy restaurant is all part of the experience.
