What is historic and what is modern? As you explore the Kunstforum Wien art galleries you may wonder. The original, solid bank building on the elegant Freyung square was built just after World War I. Yet the Kunstforum (Art Forum) now exhibits international modern and contemporary art—from Man Ray, O’Keeffe, and Kahlo to Botero and Basquiat—as well as works by currently active artists. In the 1980s, shows began to be mounted in the space, and before long it became a museum proper with a 10,000-piece collection. Some of the most stunning noble residences in the Inner City can also be found on the Freyung, from the Palais Ferstel, the home of the famous Café Central, to the palaces of the Harrach and Kinsky families.
