Komodo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
Predator and Prey sunning on Komodo beachThough the highlight of a stop on Komodo Island is the thrill of an encounter with the dragon namesake, it also happens to be one of the most stunning locations ever to wake up to and contemplate from a short distance while consuming cruise ship fare. Walk down the long pier and you are likely to see these lumbering lizards frighteningly close to the steps down to the beach. The constant flicking of their forked white tongues instill a primevil fear. It's more than a little daunting that the only protection offered by the park rangers are flimsy looking fork pronged sticks. (A guard was attacked in February of 2013 - and had also suffered an attack in 2009) It's helpful to be on your game when touring with the guards.
