Eat Like a Local
Traveling Thailand? Wanna eat seafood? Be very careful about where and what you eat when ordering seafood in Thailand (or anywhere). Most restaurants will say they have fresh seafood, even display if on ice out front, but take a second look, are that fish's eyes cloudy? Was that shrimp pre frozen? Is that a baby shark??? Sustainable seafood is a big deal these days, especially in countries like Thailand where mangroves have been all but destroyed by shrimp farming and the oceans are feeling the devastating effects of commercial fishing... But this does not mean you can't eat seafood... you should NOT eat in a restaurant advertising or serving shark in any form and avoid places selling cheap frozen critters, instead head for the small restaurants, food stalls and street vendors and ask for food caught that day.... better yet find a local fisherman on the beach and buy directly from him. Almost any restaurant will cook it up for you! Support the locals who catch fish daily with a single line and discourage frozen, commercial goods, if you see a menu with shark on it, let them know why you won't be eating with them! Not only will you be helping the environment but you will be contributing to the local economy and be encouraging behavior that will keep Thailand alive and attracting tourists for years to come.
