I was visiting the coast of Thailand and opted to see Krabi vs the well known Phuket. Even in Krabi, beaches such as Maya Beach and islands like Koh Phi Phi were very well known. I was in search of off the beaten path beaches that were stunning yet offered some solitude. My hostel guy in Ao Nang suggested taking a long tail boat out to Hong Island in the Krabi province and kayaking for the day. I saw some pictures and was convinced.
The longtail boat took me to Hong Island from Ao Nang, Krabi under an hour. Once there, my guide and I set off in our kayak for a 2 hour trip around the island. We passed stunning strips of white sand beaches that could blind the eye and even stopped inside a shallow lagoon where I got out and spotted fish I had never seen before.
During the kayak trip you're in open water which is pretty calm. The icing on the cake is the beautiful beach at the end of your kayaking trip that you can relax in. The beach here is easy to miss if you're whizzing by as it's a protected cove. On my way to the restroom I spotted a huge monitor lizard, my first one ever!
The beach was hardly crowded and I've never forgotten this trip as it was my highlight on a trip to Krabi. Ask any hotel for a kayaking experience in Hong and do not combine it with any other island hopping tour.
