In contrast with the startups and skyscrapers around it, this little blacksmithing shop has hardly changed since 1906 and is worth stopping by.
I routinely passed this antique-looking building with the title 'Edwin Klockars Blacksmithing' during my daily walk to RocketSpace, one of several technology accelerator spaces in San Francisco's SOMA district. I had always wondered how this old-school shop managed to stay open in the middle of the largest and most energetic center of innovation in the world. Until one day I noticed the sliding door was open so I took a peek inside.
The proprietor welcomed me to look around and snap a couple photos. Within the cluttered space I was pleasantly surprised to find ancient looking tools, heavy machinery, and other artifacts in operation—he even still used an old rotary telephone as his primary means of communication. In the middle of the rush to modernize and otherwise leave the past behind, there are still relics from the past to be found in this city.
