The pink plastic flamingos at the entrance made it even more enticing to visit.
Key Largo Chocolates came highly recommended as the place to get a slice of frozen key lime pie, but it was clear when I visited that I would get far more than that.
For one, owners Kristie and Bob are chatters, and will willingly show you the kitchen at the back, and an entire bin of fresh key limes too, if you let them.
From specialty items like "Bob's Chippers" which are chocolate-covered potato chips, to the key lime truffles (made with "a lot of key limes," says Kristie), there's a Floridian twist to every ganache.
The store is surprisingly big, for a chocolate store. There are fresh-made truffles, almond clusters and the like behind glass cases, and plenty of pre-packaged chocolate around the store. Frozen key lime pie-on-a-stick slices sit in the freezer, for the taking. These slices are affordable ($4.95 a pop) and are a must-try. These are sourced from Kermit’s Key Lime Shop in Key West.
The other cake balls, chocadiles, and ice cream (there's a size for toddlers) are condiments to the main show: the key lime truffle, of course.
