It was the experience I was most looking forward to when planning my trip and it did not disappoint! On a beautiful Alaskan summer day we took a 30 minute sea plane ride on the Kenai peninsula out to a little john boat where we took another 15 minute boat ride up the river to get a place where the salmon begin their journey up the river and, more importantly, where both black and brown bears come to feed. Going into nature and watching the bears in their natural habitat but remaining quiet and respectful of them was an experience I will not forget. Spending several hours watching the black bears, who were rather poor fisherman, clumsily try to catch their fish and then the brown bears coming up and immediately catching their food and devouring it in front of me was a unique experience I was lucky to have. At the end of our time with the bears, our guide caught a salmon himself then led us away from the bears to cook the fresh salmon on our boat with no more than a little salt and pepper for seasoning. It was so fresh and delicious that I am now ruined for life and will never be able to eat salmon again without comparing it to that memorable day.
