You can’t help but be awed by what a glacier and a few thousand years can do to a landscape. As we hiked closer to Exit Glacier I become aware of the enormity of this sheet of ice that has carved out the valley and the river behind us. Signposts marking how far the glacier has receded point to how fragile the glacial ecosystem is.

A shrinking glacier

I gave my dad the gift of Alaska for his 50th birthday. We did little planning and just got in the car. Everytime we saw a turn off for a glacier, we anxiously took the road and waited to see where we would end up. One time our journey led us to this glacier. Shrinking in size every year and it’s size from past years can be viewed while hiking to it.
