Wooden walkways offer a convenient path down into the Kawiti Caves at Waiomio, a network of limestone caverns, which, while fascinating on their own, take on an otherworldly aura because they are home to thousands of luminous glowworms. These tiny creatures—actually flylike fungus gnats—have twinkling blue-green lights on their tails, creating what looks like a nighttime sky above the rock formations. A highlight of the 30-minute guided tour is visiting a massive chamber dubbed the Milky Way.
