Karakul

Sunrise on Lake Karakul
It's 10:00 A.M. (China Standard Time) on the banks of the Karakul in China's far western Xinjiang province, but the sun has just barely risen. I watch a Kyrgyz family emerge from their stone houses to feed chickens and collect water in the long shadows and warm glow of early morning. The glassy lake is situated along the Karakoram Highway, a modern day Silk Road that runs for 1300 km between Kashgar, China and Islamabad, Pakistan.
