Kalopa Burial Cave

About a 90-minute walk from Kaibola village, at Kiriwina’s northern tip, are several limestone caverns that house human remains and burial artifacts. Ask your guide to tell you the myth of Dokanikani, a fat giant who so terrorized nearby villagers that they fled to these caves, where they died. The story—perhaps based on intertribal warfare and island raiding that was so prevalent in the past—is that the giant was finally killed through magic by an ancestor of Kiriwina’s current paramount chief, and the giant’s bones are said to be buried alongside those of his victims. (Tip: Stop for a swim at Kaibola village's postcard-perfect beach.)
