Perhaps no cocktail is more associated with the American South than the mint julep, and it serves as the namesake for a Houston bar that celebrates this drinks that dates back to the eighteenth century. Created by Alba Huerta—who, like Bobby Heugel, is a trailblazer on the city’s culinary scene—Julep has a tantalizing cocktail list, including four varieties of the classic bourbon-and-mint drink. Here, everyday is Derby Day: try the distinctive Spiced Julep, with hints of allspice, cinnamon, and clove. Julep is also the place to enjoy Southern classics such as Milk Punch (bourbon and cognac smoothed with milk and vanilla), a variety of Sazeracs, or a Bourbon Toddy, accompanied by alcohol-absorbing plump oysters and seafood towers. A vibrant addition to the Houston scene, Julep pays gentle tribute to the craft and traditions of the Old South in fresh and inviting ways.
