Jugendstilsenteret
No other Norwegian city looks anything like Ålesund. A walk around the compact city center is enough for many to appreciate the unique Art Nouveau architecture, but the Jugendstilsenter satisfies curious minds and tells the why behind the beauty. In 1904, most of Ålesund was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in the trendy style of the day, largely thanks to gifts of money and resources from Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany. The museum tells the full tale through a film and original material from the time, and is housed within a fine example of the architectural style. The reception retains the original fixtures and fittings from its former use as a pharmacy.
