For the past 35 years, this family-run business on the east side of Austin has been serving up some of the most authentic Tex Mex in the state. Juan and Myrna Meza’s entire family is involved, from “guelita” (short for abuelita), the grandma, to nieces and nephews, daughters and sons. Still in its original location, Juan in a Million is truly a community spot, with regulars who have been coming in for decades. The Don Juan is what Juan in a Million is most known for: a breakfast taco filled with heaping bacon, potato, egg and cheese, bundled in a fresh homemade tortilla. Students at the University of Texas in Austin have created a Don Juan Taco Contest, where they challenge themselves to jam as many Don Juans into their mouths as is humanly possible. Once you see the size of these things, you may opt out—leave it to the teenagers with a faster metabolism.
