At just 70-80 miles from Chicago, the tri-town cluster of New Buffalo/Sawyer/Three Oaks MI gives Chicagoans (and anyone nearby in any direction, really) many reasons to make a day trip of it—lots to eat and drink, artisan shops and galleries, a Lake Michigan beach during the warm months, and a weirdly high number of overpriced antique places. Journeyman, in Three Oaks, is my favorite spot.
Journeyman is a new distiller (certainly by whiskey standards) in a wonderful smelling old factory building. But what the brand itself might lack in storied past, it makes up for with good food, delicious spirits and cocktails, cool staff, and very visitor-friendly distillery experience.
Pictured above is the whiskey flight. No surprise here, but it went exceedingly well with the soft pretzel and cheese.
