This glacier lagoon is one of the most breathtaking landscapes I’ve ever seen — and that’s saying something. Located where the edge of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier meets the sea, the lagoon is a result of — what else? — climate change. Huge chunks of the glacier break off and drift towards the open water; listen and you’ll hear the sharp cracks of ice. I got there at sunset, which ended up being the perfect time thanks to the relative lack of tourists and the soft, moody lighting. All the better to take in this serene landscape. While you could cough up some money and head out on the boat tour which wends its way around the icebergs, I found it satisfying to take it all in from a stable vantage point at the water’s edge. If you’re going to be in Iceland for a handful of days, this is a definite must.
